Francois “Fanch” Ledan (French, b. 1949). Oil on canvas “Le Vieux Bassin”, depicting boats in a harbor, housed in light-tan wood frame. Signed Fanch lower right and signed, titled and dated 78 in pencil on verso. Repair in center. Detailed harborscape captures whimsy, precision and a subtle use of vibrant colors.

“Francois “Fanch” Ledan’s vivid figurative works transform everyday settings into whimsical vignettes. His paintings of vibrantly hued interiors regularly feature massive windows that open to views of sprawling sunsets and tranquil waterscapes. Ledan draws on classical techniques and modern aesthetics to create a distinctive contemporary image; he has been featured in solo exhibitions as well as group shows in Germany, France, Venezuela, and Italy, and throughout the United States. The artist began printmaking in 1973, when he first tried his hand at the difficult technique of lithography. Ledan eventually expanded into serigraphy (silkscreen printing) which became the primary medium for many of his most notable works, including Interior with Degas (1990) and PINK INTERIOR (2007).”
Accomplishments
- Following the publication of the book “The Collected Works of Fanch Ledan,” a major catalogue raisonné was published. With 235 color pages illustrating 258 different graphic works published since 1975, it was released by Park West Gallery in 2003.
Exhibitions
- Since 1973, Fanch has had more than 51 shows including exhibitions at the Pantechnicon Gallery, San Francisco; Centrao d’Arte Naivo, Milan; Galerie Malle, Aurray, France; Champs-Elysees, Paris; and Park West Gallery.
- He has participated in group shows in Germany, France, Venezuela, and Italy, as well as in the United States.
